How-to make a latch hook rug

I bought this rug kit and latch hook from Ace for $12.  I thought it would make a cute doll-size rug.  This is the first time I've done a latch hook project and I'm excited!

The kit came with a pattern, color legend, directions, and supplies.  It does not include a latch hook.  You will need to buy it separately.

The rug backing and pattern have blue squares to help make the pattern easier to follow.  You start at the blue square on lower left side and work your way to the right, then repeat.

It took a few rows to get the hang of it.  The easiest way I've found is to fold the piece of yarn in half and pinch the ends with your fingers.

Slip the hook through the loop.

Push the hook through the square until the hook and latch go through the square on top.

Hook the yarn you are holding in your left hand and pull down gently.  You will see that the latch closes as you are pulling it through the square.  Let go of the yarn.

Pull completely through the loop.

Pull the ends to tighten the knot.  Repeat for each square.

It's coming along.

I need to buy rug binding to finish this project, then it will be ready for a doll room.  Stay tuned!
